National Institute of Port Management, Chennai 1985 -1987
The National Institute of Port Management is an institute which trains personnel for managing Indian ports, with both residential and academic facilities. The design uses courtyards as organizing devices, along a narrow and linear coastal site.
The academic buildings are organized along a series of five landscaped courtyards in a linear progression from the entrance pavilion to the auditorium. A similar design strategy was used in the hostel building. Much of the RCC work - like lintels - was precast at the site to increase the speed of the construction. The campus houses offices for the administrative staff and faculty, classrooms, laboratories, computer facilities, library, a forty - bedroom hostel and staff housing.
