Reserve Bank of India, Ahmedabad 1971 -1975
The construction of the Reserve Bank of India was of equal importance to the design phase. One of the architect’s key strategies during construction was to spend significant time on site. Sometimes these visits would be organised meetings; equally often they would be surprise visits. This enabled Patel to see how the contractor was really doing things. Ultimately, he thought and worried constantly about this phase of a project, continuously asking himself whether a building had come out in a good way, and whether he had controlled the quality of workmanship properly.
